ITAN – Integrated territorial analysis of the neighbourhood

This project was funded by the European Spatial Planning Observation Network (ESPON/ORATE) programme.

It has four main objectives.

  1. Build a reliable and well-documented database (metadata) at different scales (from macro-regional to local)
  1. Contribute to the macro-regional knowledge of Europe's neighbours
  • The Mediterranean neighbourhood is linked to the European area by deep historical connections and ambitious contemporary policies (the Barcelona Process, the Union for the Mediterranean). The countries concerned border the Mediterranean Sea, from Morocco to Turkey, including Jordan.
  • The south-eastern neighbourhood includes two types of countries: (i) the Western Balkans (countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process, former Yugoslavia without Albania and Slovenia), (ii) Moldova and Ukraine, which will be analysed as part of a cross-cutting case study on the Black Sea.
  • The eastern neighbourhood includes the CIS countries, i.e. the Eastern Partnership countries: Russia, Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine.
  • The Northern Neighbourhood focuses on (i) the Baltic Sea region and relations between Belarus and North-West Russia, (ii) a wider Northern Neighbourhood: Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Northern Russia.
  1. Build an integrated analysis of the territorial structures, flows and cross-border cooperation of each of the neighbourhoods
  • What are the territorial structures and dynamics of Europe's neighbouring cities and regions?
  • What flows (transport, energy, trade, migration, investment, pollution...) link European countries and their neighbours (countries/regions) and how do they change over time?
  • What is the nature and geography of political cooperation between the European Union and neighbouring regions?
  1. Promouvoir l’approche territoriale dans le cadre des recommandations politiques sur la question du voisinage, et un potentiel « schéma de développement de l’espace du voisinage »
